Apostille for Vietnam · from California documents

Hague since 11 September 2026.

Viet Nam joined the Hague Apostille Convention, and it entered into force there on 11 September 2026. A California Secretary of State apostille is now what a Vietnamese registry, school, employer or court needs on a California public document, in place of the older embassy legalization chain. Because the change is recent, some offices may still quote the old route; we confirm what the receiving office wants and check the certified copy underneath before the fee.

Before you send anything

What the counter accepts for Vietnam.

Each line is a real rejection we screen for in the $45 Document Check.

Certified copy from the county recorder or CDPH, not a hospital or informational copy.

Current signing official. The Secretary of State authenticates only signatures it has on file.

Notarized first if it is a power of attorney, affidavit or copy certification.

Right authority for the document. County or state-issued records go to the California Secretary of State; federal records (FBI, USPTO, IRS) go to the U.S. Department of State.

Old instructions, new rule. If the office in Vietnam handed you a checklist that still asks for consular legalization, send it to us. We confirm the current route before anything is filed.

3 documents · one emergency trip · filed together

Family, school and work sets

Birth certificates, diplomas and powers of attorney, filed together in one Sacramento trip.

Returned tracked, with status updates, to Vietnam or wherever you are. Price confirmed before any work begins.

Asked on this page

Questions about this route.

Yes. Viet Nam is a contracting party to the Hague Apostille Convention, and the Convention entered into force for Viet Nam on 11 September 2026. From that date a California Secretary of State apostille is the finishing step for a California public document going to Vietnam, and a U.S. Department of State apostille is the finishing step for a federal one. The older embassy and consulate legalization chain is not needed for documents covered by the Convention.
