A Health copy may need a $13 verification.
Marin County birth and death certificates come from either the Recorder at the Civic Center or Public Health’s Vital Statistics office, both in San Rafael. A copy signed by a health officer may need the County Clerk’s $13 signature verification first. We handle that step before filing.

Why a Health copy may need a $13 verification.
The Secretary of State authenticates the signatures of California public officials. It apostilles county clerks, county recorders and the State Registrar directly. For a birth or death certificate signed by a health officer or county registrar, its guidance says county clerk certification “may be required.”
Marin’s County Clerk verifies the signatures of “health officers on birth or death certificates recorded in Marin County” for $13 per signature. The Clerk needs the original or a certified copy: “We cannot verify signatures on unofficial or photocopied documents.”
The verification is done at the County Clerk, Suite 234 at the Civic Center, not at Vital Statistics. Which official signed your copy decides whether it applies. We read the signature block, get the verification when it applies, then file in Sacramento.
