Apostille for India · from California documents
India.
India.
Hague since 2005.
Apostille first.
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco states that the Hague Convention, to which India and the United States are parties, abolishes legalization of foreign public documents, and that it attests U.S. documents only after they have been notarized and apostilled. We check the certified copy underneath before the fee, and sequence the consulate step if your receiving office asks for it.

What the counter accepts for India.
Each line is a real rejection we screen for in the $45 Document Check.
01Certified copy from the county recorder or CDPH, not a hospital or informational copy.
02Current signing official. The Secretary of State authenticates only signatures it has on file.
03Notarized first if it is a power of attorney, affidavit or copy certification.
04Some Indian offices still ask for consulate attestation on top. The consulate attests U.S.-issued documents for use in India only after they are notarized and then apostilled, quotes 21 business days as normal processing, and declines commercial and education-sponsorship documents and anything issued in India. Holders of an Indian passport or an OCI or PIO card can have documents attested without the apostille step. If your receiving office wants the consulate’s stamp, we run apostille first, then attestation.

01Does the Indian consulate in San Francisco still need to legalize it?
Not as legalization. India has been a party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 14 July 2005, and the Consulate General states that the Convention abolishes the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents. The consulate still offers attestation of U.S. documents, and states it does so only after they have been notarized and apostilled by the state authorities.
02Will my power of attorney for property in India need the consulate’s attestation as well?
Some receiving offices in India ask for it. The consulate attests U.S. documents after notarization and apostille, lists 21 business days as normal processing, and routes miscellaneous consular services through VFS Global. If you hold an Indian passport or an OCI or PIO card, the consulate states there is no need to apostille the document before attestation. We ask your receiving office which it wants and file in the right order.
03Can the consulate attest a document issued in India?
No. The Consulate General states that it does not attest any document issued by authorities in India; those are apostilled in India through the Ministry of External Affairs. What we handle here is the California-issued side: the certified copy, the notarization where needed, and the Secretary of State apostille.
04I live in India already. Can you do the whole thing without me?
Yes. Order the certified copy from the county or the state and have it shipped to our office at 416 Bryant Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, or mail us what you already hold. We check it, file it, and ship the finished apostille tracked to your address in India. International delivery is quoted per destination before we start, and we can keep you updated by WhatsApp if you prefer.
