01Certified copy from the county recorder or CDPH, not a hospital or informational copy.
02Current signing official. The Secretary of State authenticates only signatures it has on file.
03Notarized first if it is a power of attorney, affidavit or copy certification.
04Right authority, right document. California-issued records go to the Secretary of State; federal records go to the U.S. Department of State. Photocopies and hospital certificates are rejected at the counter, so we check the certified copy first.

01Does the Brazilian consulate in San Francisco still need to legalize it?
No. Brazil acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 2 December 2015 and it entered into force there on 14 August 2016. Since then a California Secretary of State apostille replaces consular legalization for U.S. documents.
02Which documents do people usually send to Brazil?
Birth, marriage and death certificates for citizenship and family registration, degrees and transcripts for study and work, FBI background checks for residency, and powers of attorney for property and inheritance matters. Powers of attorney are notarized first; we do that in the same visit.
03Do I need a Portuguese translation?
The apostille is not translated. The office in Brazil receiving the document sets the translation requirement and who must produce it. Tell us where it is going and we confirm before filing. Translation is Quoted per document by page and language before anything starts; delivered certified with a signed certificate of authenticity.
04I live in Brazil already. Can you do the whole thing without me?
Yes. Order the certified copy from the county or the state and have it shipped to our office at 416 Bryant Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, or mail us what you already hold. We check it, file it, and ship the finished apostille tracked to your address in Brazil.
